Congress shall no longer rely on deficit spending to meet the needs of the country's budget. Whether raising taxes on the rich or cutting wasteful spending on the military, Congress shall not spend more than it takes in, and shall prioritize programs that support residents' basic needs, including public education, healthcare, housing and senior retirement
Congress had increased the national debt to astronomic levels. This has to stop. Every household in American has to live within its means, so too must the country.
Additionally they cannot use money appropriated to Social Security to balance the budget
I think this is a good idea, but please make it more succinct.
While it is painfully obvious that we must cut back our spending or our system will collapse, I oppose this. The explanation gets a bit complicated, so I hope the group will allow me a couple of posts on this. What does it mean to be "balanced?" Does that mean that we won't have debt anymore? Or just that the debt cannot increase? What if the debt, while a large number, is tiny compared to our economy?
While I strongly support provisions that would rein in our spending, I think it must be done very carefully. As a comparison, look at how city government works. It must set property taxes so that it can provide services, and make payments on debt. But cities always have some degree of debt. They make capital improvements using debt, and the citizens who enjoy the new street or public pool are the ones paying back the debt. So I advocate for great care in this area.
Great!!
